Each Friday night, beginning May 4, Herndon's Town Green will be invaded by groups armed with electric guitars, drum kits, and microphones.

As the town heats up for the summer, the Herndon Dulles Chamber of Commerce will host its seventh annual Friday Night Live! summer concert series. Pioneered by Doug Downer in 1995, the free event has drawn a crowd of about 3,000 to the downtown each summer night at 6:30.

"Our goal is to have good crowds every night," said chamber president Eileen Curtis. "We'll also be praying for good weather."

The musical invasion will offer everything from island-splashed reggae rhythms, back-alley blues, and candy-coated pop, to sweet soul, brazen alternative rifts, and classic rock and roll.

Bands like "Hot Buttered Elvis," "Black Sheep," and "Gonzo's Nose" will be on hand to keep the crowd grooving. Wilson Picketts' back-up band and "The Reagan Years" will also pay tribute to the sounds of yesteryear.

"There are a lot of new bands, but there are always the ever-popular ones returning," said Patrick Barton, president of Party DC Events, which schedules the performers. "I've booked bands for 10 years and I kind of have a feel on what bands will work for the area."

Concession stands will offer refreshments to concert goers. Participants can have Hard Times Cafe's red hot chili and Dominoes' spicy wings and piping hot pizza slices, with beers supplied by Budweiser for about $4. A selection of Oasis Winery wines will also be available.

The proceeds from the concerts will support Herndon High School's post-prom party and breakfast, Herndon Optimist Club activities, and parent teacher associations.

"Each year it's grown tremendously," said Barton. "So people should arrive early and plan to stay late."
